Box plot conventions
Distribution summaries as boxes: median, quartiles, whiskers and outliers — Tukey and min/max conventions side by side.
chart.quality@1New DDN source
Why use it?
Five numbers per group beat one average per group, every time.
When it helps
Comparing spreads across groups or versions.
How to read it
- The box is the middle half; whiskers follow the declared rule (1.5×IQR or min/max).
- Outlier dots are records, named by the rule that flagged them.
What you need
- The groups
- The values per group
- The whisker convention
Things to check
- Do not mix conventions without a label — switch variants to see why it matters.
- Do not read the median as the mean.
Scope of this diagram
Exact quartiles from the records; the R7 rule and outlier set are declared and tested.
