Pareto chart
Categories sorted by count descending, with the cumulative share line: the vital few versus the trivial many.
chart.quality@1New DDN source
Why use it?
It tells you which three fixes kill most of the problem.
When it helps
Defect triage, incident categories, complaint analysis.
How to read it
- Bars descend left to right; the line is cumulative share.
- The 80% mark is a reading aid, not a law.
What you need
- The categories
- The counts
- The cumulative line
Things to check
- Do not sort by anything but count — that is the point.
- Do not merge the tail into "other" without a label.
Scope of this diagram
Declared counts; the cumulative line derives from them.
