Area chart
A filled series: the line plus the weight of what is under it.
chart.basic@1New DDN source
Why use it?
When volume matters as much as direction, the filled form says both.
When it helps
Totals evolving: throughput, stock, energy.
How to read it
- The top edge is the value; the fill is emphasis, not a second series.
- Stacked areas read as composition — this one reads as one series.
What you need
- The ordered axis
- The value with unit
- The records
Things to check
- Do not fill a series that can go negative without saying where zero is.
- Do not read the filled area as a probability.
Scope of this diagram
Declared records; bounded native marks.
