Signed stacked bars
Composition per category as stacked segments, including negative contributions across zero.
chart.quality@1New DDN source
Why use it?
Part-to-whole with a baseline: gains above, losses below.
When it helps
Budget vs variance, contribution breakdowns, reconciliations.
How to read it
- Segments stack from the zero line out, in declared series order.
- The total is the stack height, not a separate mark.
What you need
- The categories
- The signed series values
- The series order
Things to check
- Do not stack things that are not additive.
- Do not hide the zero line when signs mix.
Scope of this diagram
Declared records; bounded native marks.
